Here’s my newspaper account of our Shroomfest crew’s recent trip to Oakland, California, to host an exhibit booth for the Telluride Mushroom Festival. Scott Koch of Telluride, Mike Logghe of Espanola (NM) and Jamie Mondeau of Durango joined me. We had promotional material for our event, as well as flyers from the Telluride Visitors Center, Fungophile magazine and Fungi Perfecti catalogues. -Shroompa

Scott Koch takes a shake of the dice at our Shroomfest exhibit booth. We gave away free t-shirts for visitors who rolled seven or eleven.

The Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies celebrated its 25th year with a four day conference at the Oakland Convention Center in California Dec. 8-12, 2012. A contingent of Telluride Mushroom Festival staffers joined me to host a promotional table for our event at Cartographie Psychedelica, where serious scientific lectures and panels shared top billing with benefit celebrations and a costumed Medicine Ball — featuring DJs, interactive tech stations, a visionary art gallery and a rows of exhibit booths

Rick Doblin

Rick Doblin, Ph.D., MAPS founder and director, opened the gathering of researchers and enthusiasts by explaining the humble beginnings of the organization back in 1986. His dissertation at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government focused on “The Regulation of the Medical Use of Psychedelics and Marijuana” and his master’s thesis addressed the attitudes and experiences of oncologists concerning the medical use of cannabis. Starting MAPS was his attempt to develop legal contexts for the beneficial use of psychedelic drugs through raising funds and overcoming regulatory hurdles to do the necessary scientific studies – studies that had been curtailed in the Sixties with the government backlash against the recreational explosion of popular psychedelic use.

Manny Salzman

Many friends of Shroomfest attended the event, including Dr. Emanuel Salzman and his wife Joanne of Denver– founders of the Telluride Mushroom Festival. Manny has long been an advocate for the medicinal use of psychedelics – or “mind medicines,” as he likes to call them. In fact, it was his interest in not excluding entheogenic properties from mushroom studies that led him to found the Telluride event

Paul Stamets

Paul Stamets, one of Shroomfest’s founding faculty, gave a heartfelt talk on the need to work together to change the ruling paradigm when it comes to entheogens. His daughter is getting married this next summer, but he’s hoping to be able to make it to Telluride again.

Ethan Nadelmann

Ethan Nadelmann, J.D., Ph.D., who heads up the Drug Policy Alliance led a workshop on “Constitutional Freedoms, the Uses of Psychedelics and MAPS’ Mission. Described by Rolling Stone as “the point man” for drug policy reform on the national level, he attended Shroomfest twice, and told me he is hoping to come join us again, perhaps even this coming year. He has authored two books on international criminal law enforcement (Cops Across Borders and Policing the Globe), as well as dozens of articles on drug policy in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Science, National Review and the Nation.

Valerie Mojeiko

Valerie Mojeiko, MAPS deputy director, gave the initial conference welcome. She, along with her husband Josh, have been regular faculty presenters in Telluride, and we’re looking forward to having them back again in 2012.

The late Robert Venosa & Martina Hoffman

Martina Hoffman, one of the many psychedelic artists represented in the Visionary Art Gallery, embraced us warmly. She, and her husband – Robert Venosa – who passed away earlier this year – have been past attendees of Shroomfest, and she expressed a desire to visit us again – something we’re hoping we can make happen. A special tribute was held for Robert with a Jonathan Singer video, a digital dance performance by Android Jones and Phaedrana, and music by The Human Experience

Martina Hoffman's Third Eye

Although I didn’t get a chance to visit with them, two former mushroom festival faculty were also presenters – Don Abrams, M.D., and Ralph Metzner, Ph.D … Don is chief of the Hematology-Oncology Division of San Francisco General Hospital and Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. One of the first clinicians to recognize and define many early AIDS-related conditions, he received funding in 1997 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to conduct clinical trials of the short-term safety of cannabinoids in HIV infections. He’s gone on to run many cannabis studies, his latest being the possible pharmacokinetic interaction between vaporized cannabis and opioid analgesics in patients with chronic pain. He was co-editor with Dr. Andrew Weil of Integrative Oncology from Oxford University Press. His work is something I’ve always hoped to have presented in Telluride.

Ralph Metzner

Ralph is a psychologist and professor emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he organized an international conference on ayahuasca in 2000. His writings include two edited collections on the science and the phenomenology of shamanic entheogens: Sacred Mushrooms of Visions – Teonanácatl and Sacred Vine of Spirits – Ayahuasca. He is founder and president of the Green Earth Foundation <www.greenearthfound.org> We’re hoping very much to bring him back to Telluride as a featured speaker.

The visionary art of Mark Henson

While there were dozens of wonderful people we met in Oakland and who want to come to experience Telluride, there’s a bunch more whom we want to come to talk, like Michael Albert-Puleo, M.D., and his fascinating research on the pharmacology on the secrets of the early Christian “Messiah Medicine” <www.mythobotanicalpress.com>; Mark Henson and his Sacred Light – the Art of Conscious Evolution <www.sacredlight.to>; David Bienenstock, senior editor at High Times; Cinematographer Torsten Klimmer <www.omananda.com>; Alan Macy, Hitch McDermid and Mark Goerner’s Heart Beat Amplifier <www.heartbeatamplifier.org>; Tatiana Ginzburg from Russia <www.shriam.daism.ru>; Andres from Hungary; Jett – the list goes on and on … And the one thing I’m sure of is that Shroomfest this next year is going to be far richer and more exciting than ever with an infusion of new psychedelic energy.

Join the Fungophile Club

For years, the Colorado non-profit Fungophile, Inc. – led by the Salzman family of Denver – ran Wild Mushrooms Telluride, which eventually morphed into the Telluride Mushroom Festival. In the summers the Fungophiles would travel around the globe – usually in the company of philosopher/mycologist Gary Lincoff, searching for strange and exotic fungi, for which they had a great love [Greek> φιλος]

In 2006, the Telluride Institute stepped up to continue the event, and in 2009 Art Goodtimes returned to festival management, together with the indefatigable Kandee DeGraw and the amazing Matt Stits. This year we’re joined by Scott Koch and a wonderful family of staffers.

For the last three years we have been striving to get Shroomfest into the black, with a sufficient audience to support its unique blend of mycology, biology, philosophy, science, art, culture, spirituality and psychedelics. All while having a grand old summertime romp in the spectacular meadows and forests of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, and enjoying all the luxuries of Telluride’s fabled resort atmosphere.

We’re close to our goal, thanks to increasing audiences and grant support. But we need your help to make the final step into solvency.

So, we’re starting the Fungophile Club. These will be shroomers who believe in the work we do in celebrating everything fungal and entheogenic — through serious academic classes (which we will be developing for credit through the University Centers of the San Miguel as part of a certificate program in Sustainability), lectures, slideshows, powerpoints, panels, forays, workshops, demonstrations, cook&tastes, film, music, poetry and our legendary parade.

The Fungophile Club will help us raise the early capital to ensure that we can bring fantastic speakers like Lincoff, Paul Stamets, Kat Harrison, Tom Volk, Katrina Blair, David Rose and dozens of others to our annual August get-together (Shroomfest 2012)

We’re soliciting various levels of club membership to fit shroomers’ different financial situations. For those folks too strapped to donate to our cause, we are also offering a full range of discount tickets (See the Tickets tab)

But for the Fungophile Club members, we’re asking you to help us continue a grand tradition over 30 years old that offers some of the best foray fields in North America with the wildest of lecturers across the full range of the mycological and entheogenic universe. All donations, or portions thereof, for which no gift or service is received are tax-deductible. Checks should be made out to the Telluride Institute (a registered 501c3) with a note that this is a donation for Shroomfest 2012. Send to the Telluride Institute, P.O. Box 1770, Telluride CO 81435.
On behalf of the Telluride Institute, I want to thank this year’s shroomers for a grand success.. Shroomfest31 drew record crowds to hear the amazing Paul Stamets myco-amaze us. Our new Palm Theatre venue provided a professional stage for Gary Lincoff’s stand-up myco-punditry. We showcased Kat Green’s The Secret Life of Mushrooms. And had a local chefs’ mushroom cookoff that drew an overflow audience to the Wilkinson Library patio.

Forays were a high point. The shrooms were out, if not always in profusion – mostly chanterelle, in the edible category. Although mushrooms of all kinds filled the Elks Park display tables. As Compost-Collector-In-Chief (among other duties), I was quite pleased with the festival leftovers this year. And how well everything worked, including our annual Shroomfest Parade (thanks to a devoted crew of staffers).

Our Webmaster Matt will be posting many shots from this year’s event in the next few months – if you have ones you’d like us to feature, send ‘em to us. Shroomfest’s a collective effort, like Burning Man. How good it gets to be depends in no small spore on how much you can help us keep it going/growing…

Fungal Blessings, Shroompa

Hello everyone, Anna McHugh is speaking this year and has an amazing radio documentary called Crazy About Mushrooms that we think everyone will really enjoy.

Here’s a brief bio about Anna and be sure to visit the Wilkinson tomorrow to see the talk

Anna McHugh is a radio journalist and mycophile (mushroom lover) who grew up in Nevada City, CA. Her first time on the air was as a radio dramatist on community radio station KVMR-FM in 1994. In 1999, Anna produced a radio documentary called “The Public Defender,” which won the 2000 National Federation of Community Broadcasters Golden Reel Award for Public Affairs.

Over the years, Anna gained radio experience working with her father, Joe McHugh. Amongst the projects she assisted with is “The Telling Takes Us Home, A Celebration of American Family Stories,” which was aired on NPR and Voice of America with a worldwide audience. Anna also served as an assistant producer on “Omaha Voices,” a public radio series produced by young people involved with juvenile drug court about the elders of Omaha, Nebraska.

Anna attended the University of Virginia, majoring in history. For five years, she worked as a legal advocate for foster children and at-risk youth in Portland, Oregon.

While living in the Northwest, Anna discovered a passion for mycology, and started hunting wild mushrooms, growing gourmet mushrooms at home, and learning botany. She now lives in the Austin, Texas area and is working on a book and radio documentary highlighting the stories and experiences of mushroom lovers from all over the United States.
